The Frankston Star - 2008

Rigging the Frankston Star - a temporary installation for Christmas 2008 The star with the lights on

In mid-2008, Show Works was approached to design and supply a Christmas Star to the City of Frankston's civic Christmas Tree. The existing star was deemed to be passed its sell by date and needed replacing and to complicate matters, the tree had been struck by lightening 3 times in recent years. As installation contractor, Show Works brought Frankston Council in touch with riggers, structural engineers and electricians. This custom installation was designed in-house at Show Works using the skill and know how that comes with over 90 years collective experience in theatrical installation works

After several redesigns for budgetary reasons and with the assistance of Showtech Rigging, Prodigious Concepts and Wallbridge and Gilbert Structural Engineers, a 2 metre star was produced using folded aluminium, holographic foil, i-lite illumination and several thousand "shimmers".

The tiny polyethylene discs were painstakingly fitted off to the star in preparation for its "raising" in late November and with the assistance of a boom crane, a cherry picker and several strong coffees, the star was up in place on time and on budget.
